When the Serra Catholic baseball team took the field for Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 2A championship game at Wild Things Park, its youth was put on full display.
The Eagles’ defensive alignment consisted of three veterans – senior shortstop Pat Brennan and the junior duo of pitcher Alex Glumac and catcher Mark Black.
The rest were underclassmen.
Four sophomores – Zack Miklos (first base), Dom DeMoss (designated hitter), Dom Puzzanchera (left field) and Jayden Mertz (second base) – and three freshmen in right fielder Nico Eremic, Matt Bisceglia (third base) and Eli Kite (center field) rounded out the starters for Serra Catholic.
The young Eagles team didn’t get the outcome it was looking for, falling to Seton LaSalle, 11-2, to claim WPIAL runner-up honors, but the growth of the young team should not be diminished.
