Rostraver Food Pantry recently held its first distribution day under new leadership.

Following the retirement of former coordinators Rev. Suzanne and Richard Curry, pantry operations fell into the hands of longtime volunteers Joe Valent and Karen Heasley.

Valent, 76, of North Belle Vernon is a retired electrical engineer who previously worked for a shipyard in Newport News, Va., and various Westinghouse locations. He said he got involved with the pantry because he “never learned not to volunteer.”

“The pantry has been around for at least 20 or 30 years, so a lot longer than me,” Valent said. “I started volunteering a few years ago on distribution days, because I was retired and really had nothing else to do.”
