SA falls short in high-scoring matchup

It was deja-vu for the South Allegheny softball team Monday afternoon as it squared off against Ellwood City in the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
As they did in a first-round defeat last season, the Gladiators suffered the same fate in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal matchup at Gateway High School, falling 11-10 in a back-and-forth, nine-inning contest against the Wolverines.
Natalie Greco delivered the decisive double in the top of the ninth inning, allowing the Wolverines (13-6) to take a one-run advantage. Greco stung a ball into the left-center field gap, allowing Anna Feruci to score the eventual winning run from first base.
Despite putting 10 runs on the scoreboard, there was no late-game heroics for the Gladiators (16-3) as they went down in order to end the game.
