Outraged residents are calling for the resignation of a Belle Vernon Area School Board director in the wake of an under-age drinking incident.

Michelle Callaway-Rodriguez came under fire during Monday’s board meeting, which quickly turned sour once the public comment portion opened. Nearly 200 parents, students and district staff members packed the middle school cafeteria, where anger, tears and standing ovations were abundant throughout the evening.

In anticipation of increased crowd participation, board President Lou Rood set some “ground rules” for those in attendance, limiting comments to three minutes per person, requiring speakers to identify themselves and asking that they only speak once.

Solicitor Vic Kustra announced that he advised school board members not to respond to any comments in regard to the disciplinary action against the eight high school cheerleaders involved in the incident.
