Clad in a fresh, red and black paint job, Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Company’s brush truck is ready for action.
After multiple years of planning, the refurbishment began in June 2018. Fueled by various, anonymous donors and fundraisers, students from Steel Center for Career and Technical Education volunteered their time prepping, sanding, priming and finally painting the vehicle. Primarily used for wildland firefighting, brush fires and high-water rescues, the 6×6 brush truck will assist with rescuing people from heavily wooded areas in Allegheny County.
Blaine Hill is one of four fire departments in Elizabeth Township, responding to the areas of Fox Run and portions of state Route 51 and is staffed by 30 volunteer firefighters.
The brush truck is one of six emergency vehicles owned by the department and is the only one of its kind in the township. However, it will respond to emergency calls wherever it is needed.
“It’s not your average, everyday fire truck. It will be a valuable resource for Elizabeth Forward, and the students did a phenomenal job helping us refurbish it,” firefighter Shane Corwin said.
