McKeesport Area students and their families who participate in this year’s Roaring Readers Summer Family Literacy Program are in for “a road trip” around the city.
Along with the Roaring Readers’ typical tradition of read-aloud sessions and activities to promote literacy, the inaugural “Summer Reading City Road trip” will take young readers on an interactive journey through the city where they will learn about McKeesport’s rich history and the free facilities and amenities that they can take advantage of all year round.
The program is for students from age 3 through grade five and is supported through McKeesport Area School District’s Title I funding. It is being run by teachers Amy O’Grady and Amy Dellapenna.
“We started the Mc-Keesport Area School District Roaring Readers Summer Family Literacy Program in the summer of 2012 to increase an awareness of the importance of reading over the summer,” Dellapenna said. “The research often referred to as the summer slide shows how when children don’t read over the summer they can lose up to three months of instruction.
“We wanted to support families who are looking for ways to keep their children involved in reading and writing over the summer, while also helping them to gain new skills and experiences.”
