Monessen making progress on deficit

The contents of a Monessen financial audit suggest the city is slowly overcoming a $345,000 deficit.

Mayor Matt Shorraw released the city’s 2018 audit early last week, prior to the auditors’ traditional, annual exit interview.

The documents, which detail the city’s total debt of $7.2 million, were compiled by Cypher & Cypher of Canonsburg and submitted to the state Department of Community and Economic Development March 26. According to the documents, the financial report’s status with the state is still “pending.”

Auditors are not slated to present their findings to city council before June, and the full report will not be available online until later this year. DCED’s website, www.dced.pa.gov, currently lists Monessen financial reports through Dec. 31, 2017.
