In a non-section battle between a pair of playoff-bound teams, Class 3A’s Southmoreland got the best of Class A Monessen, 14-5, Tuesday.
The Scotties (9-6) finished with 15 hits and scored early and often, plating five runs in the opening two innings and six more in the third. The fourth-place team from Section 3-3A added three more insurance runs in the seventh.
“I was able to play some of the girls that haven’t been able to play a lot this year and got them some reps, that is what’s important because you’re going to need everybody going into the playoffs,” Southmoreland head coach Todd Bunner said.
Errors proved costly for the Greyhounds (5-9), the fourth-place team out of Section 2-A and winners of four in a row entering Tuesday. Monessen committed eight errors in the loss, including four in the third inning.
