Rostraver Township commissioners told residents Wednesday night they are investigating complaints about the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill.
Several residents spoke out against ongoing problems they claim to endure by living near the facility.
Devin DeRienzo, board president, told residents that he and fellow Commissioner Gary Beck have essentially been holding fact-finding meetings regarding the landfill and “we have found something very disturbing. Something we were not aware of, frankly. We’ve reached out to (the state Department of Environmental Protection) and have also reached out to some former DEP workers who live in the township. We met with them and they are going to do some investigation for us.”
DeRienzo said the township has also reached out to several state officials, including state Rep. Justin Walsh, R-Rostraver, who has contacted the Environmental Protection Agency.
“I can’t discuss what he’s looking for,” DeRienzo said,
Resident Debbie Fought, who was part of a lawsuit filed against the landfill several years ago, said under the state’s constitution, she has a right to clean air. She showed several photos that she said depicts workers bringing in refuse after 8 p.m. and particles of landfill dust flowing across her property.
