Lt. Gov. John Fetterman sought support for Gov. Tom Wolf’s Restore Pennsylvania initiative at Friday’s Legislative Lunch held by the Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce.
As keynote speaker, Fetterman urged other lawmakers at the event to back the legislation, which would invest $4.5 billion over the next four years in projects such as flood prevention, landslide mitigation, blight elimination and ensuring that state residents have access to high-speed internet and public transportation.
Money to support the program would be raised through what Fetterman called “a common sense, not punitive” severance tax on shale gas extraction. Fetterman told the gathering the tax is in line with what other states are charging for gas drilling and extraction.
“We are the only state in the country that does not impose a severance tax for shale gas extraction,” he said.
