McKeesport traffic light project begins

Motorists who frequently travel along state Route 148 in McKeesport near the city’s border with Versailles borough will soon see a new traffic light go up.

Under the direction of Trans Associates Engineering Consultants Inc., Carnegie-based Power Contracting Co. began work this week on installation of traffic signal poles where Route 148 (Walnut Street) intersects with Route 48 (Long Run Road) near the Wilson Baum Agency Inc. and Rain Athletics, which is in the newly built Walnut Crossing development.

A traffic light and turning lane will be added to the intersection. City officials say the “long-awaited infrastructure project” is “a necessary improvement,” allowing ingress and egress to the privately owned Walnut Crossing.

A $316,100 grant, approved through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Multimodal Transportation Fund in 2016, will be used to improve the intersection, which links McKeesport’s Walnut Street corridor with neighboring business districts and highway access through White Oak, Versailles and Elizabeth Township.
