Joseph H. Schmidt – Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Monessen

Joseph H. Schmidt, 95, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Monessen, died Saturday, April 20, 2019, at his home in Claremont Retirement Village. He was born on July 6, 1923, in Monessen, the son of the late Julius and Mary Doerfler Schmidt. Joe was a 1942 graduate of Monessen High School and resided in Monessen most of his life before moving to Bethel Park and then Columbus, Ohio. Joe retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation, having worked as a foreman in the Blooming Mill. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Church and its Holy Name Society and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council 954. He and his late wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Wilding Schmidt, enjoyed doing crafts together. Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He is survived by four daughters, Lyn (Louis) Charobee of Dublin, Ohio, Sharon (William) Haines of North Port, Fla., Deborah (Daniel) LaBriola of Fairfax Station, Va., Patricia (Charles) Wille of Hillard, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Raymond Schmidt; and by three sisters, Sister John Bosco, RSM., Sister Mary Schmidt, RSM. and Catherine Williams. Friends will be received in DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019, beginning with a 9 a.m. blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 a.m. funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 44 Pennsylvania Blvd., Monessen, with Father Michael J. Crookston officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gas cards to be donated that will be given to the Red Cross drivers who transported Mr. Schmidt.
