Condition of Belle Vernon roads sparks anger at meeting

Tempers flared Tuesday as Belle Vernon borough council denied responsibility for lack of progress on street projects.

Over the last few years, council met with PennDOT officials and other stakeholders multiple times to discuss options for a complete overhaul of borough streets. Extensive street damage, particularly on Blind Lane, and other infrastructure issues continue to grow as heavier-than-normal rainfall and flooding hit the Mid-Mon Valley regularly.

Council previously discussed pursuing a bond issue for the $1.2 million project, which would have included total street repaving, handicap corners and more.

“I’m at my end. I don’t even know where to go with it now,” Councilman Rich Saxberg said. “We sat here with PennDOT two years ago and then we blew PennDOT off, when we shouldn’t be blowing PennDOT off.”
