More than two dozen Charleroi Area High School seniors took over the Magic City Wednesday during Student Government Day.
Since 1968 when the program was established by a former social studies teacher, the late Jim Protin, students have taken on the roles of locally elected officials and other agencies to get a behind-the-scenes perspective of the day-to-day operations of a borough.
The Charleroi Student Government Day, made possible through a collaboration of the school district, borough and American Legion, is the only remaining student government day in the state and one of just a few across the country.
Students who volunteer for the program are elected to their positions by their peers and then sworn into office by Magisterial District Judge Larry Hopkins before getting to work.
