Two Mid-Mon Valley student writers recently earned national awards for their original works.

Belle Vernon Area Middle School eighth-grader Sarah Ruschak and Charleroi Area High School junior Amanda Cooke participated in the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

Administered locally by California University of Pennsylvania, the competition allows students in grades seven through 12 to submit original art or writing pieces in categories such as memoir, short story, science fiction, critical essay, flash fiction, poetry, dramatic play, novel and more.

Both Ruschak and Cooke were Gold Key winners at the regional level.
