Eleven days ahead of schedule, U.S. Steel announced on Thursday morning that the company is now desulfurizing 100 percent of the coke oven gas generated at the Clairton Coke Works plant.
“While we employed many effective mitigation measures after a fire on Dec. 24 caused catastrophic damage to the facility, we are now able to operate the state-of-the-art desulfurization plant again,” U.S. Steel spokeswoman Meghan Cox said. “This is an important milestone in our repair efforts and we will continue to monitor and adjust coking times as appropriate.”
Although it has been working since Jan. 8 to make the repairs, the company has been under a revised Allegheny County Health Department enforcement order since March 12 related to daily sulfur dioxide, or SO2, emissions following the fire.
