It wasn’t pretty, but California head baseball coach Lou Pasquale will take it.
In their first section game since moving back down from Class 2A to Class A, the Trojans used proficient baserunning and a solid pitching performance by Jacob Swartz to capture a 6-3 win over Monessen at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
California (3-1, 1-0) swiped eight bases while Swartz allowed three runs on four hits in six innings. He didn’t allow a walk and punched out nine.
“I don’t know what to expect from our opponents, but I’m always happy with a win,” Pasquale said. “It doesn’t matter who it’s against, if it’s in section play or if it’s ugly. I’d rather have an ugly win than a pretty loss any day.”
