A main street in North Belle Vernon will be soon become more safe and accessible thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
The Broad Avenue Streetscape project will enhance safety and mobility through the business district and connect the area to a key tourism asset — North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park.
The project is expected to cost $1.3 million and will be completed in three phases.
The grant is a result of more than a year of work by borough officials, MGR Consultants and Mackin Engineering, who designed the multi-million-dollar project.
MGR met with Gov. Tom Wolf’s office, the Department of Community and Economic Development, the Commonwealth Financing Authority, a bipartisan group of state legislators and county and local officials to bring project funding to the community.
In addition to the $150,000 grant, the borough is contributing $50,000 in matching funds to secure the investment in the business district as a popular tourist attraction.
North Belle Vernon Councilman and Parks and Recreation Chairman RJ Sokol said he is thankful for the collaboration of all involved.
“Through the collaborative efforts of North Belle Vernon Council and MGR Consultants, coupled with the support of state Sen. Pat Stefano, state Rep. Justin Walsh, state Rep. Bud Cook, our team of Westmoreland County leaders and even our neighboring community leaders for the Phase I funding commitment for our project, our initial dream is becoming a reality,” Sokol said.
