Monessen narrowly avoided disaster Friday as a gas line on a demolition site started leaking.
The problem arose as crews from the Connellsville-based Ritenour and Sons Construction Inc. began demolishing 550 Donner Ave. The vacant building began collapsing in October 2017, eventually leading to the closure of Citizens Bank next door.
Councilman Dave Feehan said nearby City Hall was evacuated Friday morning as a precaution as Peoples Natural Gas worked to stop the leak.
“It was a gas company error,” Feehan said. “Ritenour has all the paperwork from the last time they had to shut down a work site because of a leak.”
