One word can be used to describe how Joe Sabolek felt as he pitched in his first collegiate game against Penn State Altoona in Winter Haven, Fla. on March 3: Cautious.
The Waynesburg freshman allowed six earned runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings of a 10-1 defeat, earning the first loss of his career.
“I pitched cautious and was more worried about making a mistake rather than pitching to win,” Sabolek said. “I was pretty mad at myself at first but I knew there would be a quick turnaround and that I would have a chance to get back out on the bump.”
Four days later, the Belle Vernon Area graduate had a chance to redeem himself.
And he did just that.
