U.S. Steel on Friday gave an updated timeline for repairs to be made for the Clairton Coke Plant’s desulfurization process.
Repairs to desulfurization equipment damaged during a Dec. 24 fire are expected to be completed by April 15, according to a statement from the company.
The coke plant and its desulfurization process have been at the center of the Allegheny County Health Department’s attention for several months because of multiple exceedances of the federal standard of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, which came as a result of a Christmas Eve fire that damaged a large roof, a control room and several pieces of equipment, including those used in the desulfurization process.
Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with a strong odor similar to a just-struck match, and is a respiratory irritant. Desulfurization is a set of technologies used to remove SO2 from exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants, and from the emissions of other sulfur-oxide emitting processes.
