At the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey, four Mon Valley wrestlers have advanced to today’s quarterfinals.

Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence, Elizabeth Forward’s Ryan Michaels and Jon Vargo from Bentworth move on in the 2A portion. Belle Vernon’s Scotty Joll is still alive in the 3A winners’ bracket.

It took all of 30 seconds for Lawrence (26-3) to dispatch of Central Columbia’s Jacob Busch at 160 pounds.

Lawrence, the No. 1 seed, is the returning state champion at 152 pounds. The Commodores junior faces off today against Derek Berlitz (31-13) of Notre Dame – Green Pond.

Michaels (40-1), the No. 3 seed, also won by pinfall in his 113-pound opener. He pinned Cole Bayless of Reynolds at the 1:19 mark of the third period. The EF junior’s quarterfinal bout will be against Mifflinburg’s Gabe Gramly (38-6).
