While two Belle Vernon wrestlers fell short of their ultimate goal this past weekend, they were still able to punch their tickets to the state tournament in Hershey with runner-up WPIAL 3A finishes.

Seniors Scotty Joll and Logan Seliga each lost in the WPIAL finals to a No. 1 seed at Canon-McMillan High School Saturday.

Joll (32-7), the returning WPIAL champion at 170 pounds and a West Virginia recruit, fell 9-2 to Mt. Lebanon’s Luke Stout (39-1) in the 182-pound final. It was the third time that Stout defeated Joll on the season.

“Scotty losing to Stout again was not pleasant for him or us,” BVA coach Mike Doppelheuer said. “But having already won a WPIAL title and having a fifth-place state finish, it’s more important to focus on improving on that. We hope to get another shot at Stout next weekend.”
