Record-setting performances by a pair Belle Vernon Area boys stole the show at the WPIAL Class 2A swimming championship on Friday afternoon at the Joe C. Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh.

Sophomore Ian Shahan was the top seed coming into the 100 Freestyle, an event he didn’t even swim until recently. After being disappointed in the progress of his backstroke, he changed things up and tried freestyle, where he quickly found his rhythm.

“I switched it up. My 100 back just wasn’t where I wanted it to be. So, I decided to go for the 100 free,” Shahan explained.

Shahan trailed by a tenth of a second after 50 yards, but powered ahead to the finish, racing in with a time of 45.48 to top Neshannock’s Conner McBeth by .32 seconds. Shahan came out of the water to lights flashing on the scoreboard. He’d set a new WPIAL record.
