Monessen OKs fines for absences

Monessen’s mayor or any member of council will risk a fine if they miss any more regular or special council meetings.

Council members Anthony Orzechowski, Dave Feehan and Lois Thomas voted Thursday to adopt a first-of-its-kind ordinance that provides for “the assessment of reasonable fines for absences at regular or special meetings of council.”

Mayor Matt Shorraw was again absent Thursday, as he has been for the past 25 consecutive meetings. Also missing was Councilman Gil Coles, who has only attended one meeting in the past 12 months.

Under the ordinance, which takes effect immediately, elected officials must notify council in writing within two business days of the missed meeting, explaining “in sufficient detail” that their absence is “justified” as “excused.”
