Motivation wasn’t something that Belle Vernon Area swimmers Ian Shahan and Robby Spekis lacked heading into day one of the WPIAL 2A swimming championships Thursday afternoon.

Shahan had his sights set on earning redemption after placing second in the 100 butterfly at last year’s event, while Spekis, the defending WPIAL champion in the 200 individual medley, was simply focused on not being dethroned.

Both standouts accomplished their goals at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool, as Shahan set a meet record en route to winning gold in the 100 butterfly and Spekis claimed his second consecutive WPIAL title in the 200 IM.

“I think (last year) really pushed me because even before the high school season started, I was training,” Shahan said. “Last year I fell short and I really wanted this.”
