No students were injured when a Belle Vernon Area school bus was hit from behind Thursday morning while it was stopped to pick up a student just outside of North Belle Vernon.

Rostraver Township police Chief Greg Resetar said the bus was carrying 11 students who were all seated at the time of the crash. He added that it was legally stopped near First Presbyterian Church on Fayette Avenue at 8:10 a.m. to pick up a student who was waiting at the curbside.

A Subaru Forester driven by 23-year-old Summer Baumgardner of Belle Vernon failed to stop and collided with the back of the bus, breaking a window on the rear emergency exit door, Resetar said.

“All 12 students and the bus driver were checked at the scene by paramedics and were loaded onto another bus,” BVA Transportation Director Dave Bashada said. “They were taken to Marion Elementary School, where they were examined by the school nurse and determined to be OK.”
