The WPIAL individual wrestling season gets under way today at Canon MacMillan High School with the Class 2A section championships. The top four wrestlers from each of three sections advance to the WPIAL championships on Saturday, again at Canon-Mac.

Locally there are three returning section champs, two who doubled as a WPIAL champion.

Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence (15-3) is a two-time Section 3 champ, winning at 152 pounds a year ago. He used a WPIAL championship to springboard him to a PIAA state championship, the first in Frazier history in any sport. He is the top seed at 160 pounds in this year’s bracket.

Charleroi senior Jon Vargo (18-4), who wrestles for Bentworth as part of a co-op agreement, won section and WPIAL gold at 182 pounds in 2018. He is the second seed in Section 1 at 195 pounds.
