Gender pay gap debated in Monessen

Monessen Councilman Anthony Orzechowski came under fire Thursday for his denial of an alleged gender pay gap in Monessen. 

Resident Donald Gregor took issue with Orzechowski’s comments in response to Mayor Matt Shorraw’s list of concerns about city practices. 

Shorraw, who has missed 25 consecutive council meetings, previously said council has yet to address the city’s alleged gender pay gap. Orzechowski denied the existence of any kind of sexual discrimination among city employees. 

“You said you didn’t understand what he was talking about,” Gregor said to Orzechowski. “There’s a woman working for the city for 25 years and only making $17 an hour, but you’ve got a male employee who’s been here less than seven years making $20 an hour.
