Councilwoman advises residents of lead abatement, weatherization programs

McKeesport councilwoman LuEthel Nesbit encourages Allegheny County parents who live in McKeesport, and across the Mon Valley, to take advantage of the Allegheny Lead Safe Homes program.
At last week’s council meeting, Nesbit reminded residents that Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker has cautioned that “no amount of lead is a safe amount of lead for children.”
Nesbit said Valley residents should take the threat of lead poisoning or elevated blood levels seriously because many of the homes in the region were built prior to 1978, and may contain lead-based paint or may have been constructed with other lead-based materials.
Lead is a neurotoxin commonly found in our daily lives, according Hacker.
