Monongahela city council has formed an ad hoc committee to help coordinate this summer’s 250th anniversary.
A celebration will be held Aug. 8 through Aug. 11 throughout the city.
The event — called Monongahela Homecoming 2019 — is being planned by the Monongahela Area Historical Society.
The president of the nonprofit Monongahela 250 group, Laura Magone, asked council during Wednesday’s meeting how the celebration committee could best figure out logistics with city representatives. She said it’s going to be a party for the entire town and the logistics involved will be massive.
“I’m here to tell you all how excited we are for the 250 celebration,” Magone said. “I’m sure everyone who is 50 years old remembers the celebration that happened 50 years ago. It was a party that was thrown for the town that a lot of people remember.”
Magone said many things have changed in the city like the population, the school district and the downtown area in the years since the last party.
“We’ve started a corporation that has four officers — me, Carol Frye, Susan Bowers and Martha Muniz,” Magone said. “We are inviting other nonprofits in town to participate and have a chance to raise money for their organizations.”
The group has reached out to the fire department, the library and other groups. Magone said several have already signed up.
