Belle Vernon Area graduate and Penn State freshman pitcher Bailey Parshall picked up her first career win, and loss, in her first two appearances with the Nittany Lions at the Florida Gulf Coast Kickoff Classic Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.
In a 10-2 win over Ball State in the season opener, Parshall entered the game in the bottom of the second inning in relief of fellow freshman Kylee Lingenfelter, who had just allowed a game-tying two-run homer to Ball State’s Olivia Huffman.
The call to the circle was something Parshall has been waiting for most of her life.
“Waking up this morning, I was filled with excitement,” she said. “Taking the mound today, I felt at ease. I felt prepared and trusted my teammates 100 percent. I fulfilled my childhood dream today and now I can focus on our team goal. That’s winning and making regionals.”
The move to Parshall was all the Nittany Lions needed as she cruised through the next four and a third innings.
She didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out eight.
