There’s a new chief in town, and he says he is excited to have the job and engage with his community.
At the request of McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko and at the recommendation of newly-retired police Chief Bryan J. Washowich, council unanimously voted to promote Adam Alfer to the position of chief of the McKeesport Police Department.
Before a standing-room-only crowd in council chambers, Alfer, 42, was sworn in by his longtime friend and one of his mentors, Magisterial District Judge Eugene F. Riazzi Jr.
Washowich, who served as chief for the past eight years, was employed by the police department for 25 years. He officially retired Feb. 8.
The evening was an emotional roller coaster for Alfer, who fought back tears as Cherepko and Riazzi praised the veteran cop.
Alfer has been a city police officer for 23 years, having been promoted to his full-time status 20 years ago.
He began his law enforcement career in McKeesport fresh out of high school as a cadet, alongside two of his best friends, Lt. Mark Steele and officer Chris “Chip” Olinsky.
“We started out as young kids together and we are still here together as good friends,” Alfer said.
Over the years, Alfer climbed the ranks and became a detective in charge of investigating juvenile crimes before he was promoted to sergeant at the request of Washowich. He served in that position for several years.
About two years ago, he was promoted to assistant chief by Washowich and Cherepko.
