As Monessen girls head coach Janine Vertacnik sat waiting for a post-game interview, a number of her players approached her with arms wide open.

Tears and hugs followed. One thing Vertacnik didn’t want to hear though was an apology.

Disappointment was rampant as the Greyhounds missed out on the WPIAL playoffs with a 35-28 loss to visiting Mapletown in Section 2-A play.

With the win, the Maples claim the final playoff spot and finish in fourth place in the standings.
