Joseph James Campus – Monessen

Joseph James Campus, 83, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, in Dunlevy Manor. Born in Monessen, he was the son of the late John and Ann Povernik Hnatko and the late James Campus. Mr. Campus was an avid musician. He began playing the trumpet as a young boy and continued his love of music his entire life. He retired as the band director of Clairton High School and had served as assistant band director at the University of Pittsburgh from 1975 to 1985. He played with such notables as Benny Benack and Joe Negri. He had been an arranger and conductor in international vocalist Enzo Stuarti’s band and had arranged for the Tuesday Night Band. He was a part of the orchestra at the famed “Twin Coaches Supper Club” of Rostraver Township. Mr. Campus had the “Joe Campus Band” and was a Hall of Fame member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society. Surviving are his son, Frank and wife Marcy Campus; daughter, Chelsea Campus; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah-Jean and Michael. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Campus; infant brother, Joseph Campus; and brother, Frank Hnatko. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC.,1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen PA 15062, where friends will be welcomed from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Father Michael Crookston officiating. Contributions may be made to the Mon Valley Academy of The Arts, 23 Andrews Lane, Charleroi, PA 15022 in lieu of flowers.
