Four local state lawmakers are set to have a town hall public hearing next week to hear some of the concerns of area residents in regard to higher-than-normal exceedances of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted from U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works.
To evaluate what can be done on a state level to prevent future problems from the coke plant, State Sens. Jim Brewster, D-Mc-Keesport, and Jay Costa, D-Swissvale, and state Reps. Bill Kortz, D-Dravosburg, and Austin Davis, D-McKeesport, will hold a joint Senate-House Democratic Policy Committee hearing at noon Feb. 7 at the Clairton Municipal Building on Ravensburgh Boulevard.
Officials from the Allegheny County Health Department will be present.
The lawmakers will listen to what laws or policies their constituents think can be created to prevent future exceedances SO2, and to prevent future hindrances of public notification when something goes wrong at the coke plant.
