Betty J. Sutherland – Monongahela

Betty J. Sutherland, 91, of Monongahela, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, in her home. She was born April 11, 1927, in Monongahela, the daughter of Charles E. and Gertrude J. Baxter Walters. Betty was a graduate of Monongahela High School and in her younger years was employed as an operator at the Bell Telephone Company in Charleroi and as a cafeteria worker at the Ringgold High School. She was a member of St. Damien of Molokai Church in Monongahela and a former member of its Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Altar Rosary Christian Mothers. Betty enjoyed canning, baking and playing bingo. She and her husband Clyde enjoyed going to the casino at the Meadows, Wheeling and Atlantic City.​ She is survived by two sons, Gery Sutherland and wife Janice, Scott Sutherland and wife Patricia and daughter-in-law, Vicki Sutherland, all of Monongahela; six grandchildren, Gery Sutherland Jr., Heather Popich and husband Andrew, Cory Sutherland, Tracy Benney and husband Aaron, Thomas and Carl Sutherland; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.​ In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Anthony Sutherland, who died Dec. 26, 2018; son, Mark Sutherland who died Oct. 6, 2016; and two brothers, Charles and William “Mandy” Walters.​ Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019 and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at St. Damien of Molokai Church. Committal services and interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.fryefuneralhome.com​.
