Tour targets Monessen ‘nuclear’ fears

In an effort to quell some of the rumors surrounding the former Monessen Municipal Complex, representatives of its new owner stopped by the city Thursday.

Best Medical Group, owned by Virginia-based millionaire entrepreneur Krishnan Suthanthiran, purchased the former complex at 1 Wendell Ramey Way from the city in May 2017. Collectively called Team Best, Suthanthiran’s companies specialize in cancer diagnostics and treatment technology.

Late last year, Team Best was granted a license to house radioactive materials at the site — zoned commercial rather than industrial, which is required for a facility to house such materials. Since the licensing, rumors have circulated regarding Suthanthiran’s plans for the site, possible water contamination and alleged hazardous waste material already being lodged in the building’s basement.

A tour of the complex led by Suthanthiran’s attorney, James M. Brady of Springfield, Va., and Best Medical International Director of Brachytherapy Systems and Clinical Research Dave Strong revealed empty rooms with no radioactive materials or machinery in sight.
