In response to an online video posted by Monessen’s absentee mayor, the city’s acting mayor issued his own “State of the City” address Thursday.

On New Year’s Day, Mayor Matt Shorraw posted a video of himself on YouTube in which he is seated in front of a fireplace in his home, reading from a cellphone. The video, titled “State of the City of Monessen, 2018,” has since been viewed more than 1,650 times.

In the almost nine-minute video, Shorraw covers a wide range of topics, including alleged harassment by a “certain council person,” city hall alarm codes being changed to block him from accessing the building after hours and the state’s ongoing investigation of possible fraud related to the police pension fund.

On Thursday, Shorraw, who has missed 22 consecutive council meetings since May 10, was temporarily stripped of the powers of his office.
