Coming into the season, new Monessen girls basketball coach Janine Vertacnik didn’t hide the fact that she thought her team could compete for a playoff spot.
Well, the Greyhounds added another dog to the board in the locker room and they played their way right into the hunt for the final playoff spot in Section 2-A with a 45-18 win over visiting Jefferson-Morgan Thursday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak.
The task was tall for the Rockets (4-9, 1-4), who played the game with only five players.
“We figured we’re going to need six wins to get into the playoffs. So we added that second dog to the board. We knew the situation coming in and we got off to a slow start,” Vertacnik said. “But we realized we needed to go out there and play because they had five girls who love the game of basketball and they were here to play.”
