Members of the Charleroi boys basketball team knew what was at stake in Friday night’s Section 4-3A showdown with McGuffey: win and take over first place.

The Cougars did just that as they claimed their fourth straight win with a 50-39 triumph at Charleroi High School.

The win, which was Charleroi’s fifth consecutive in section play, gives the Cougars (8-5, 5-1) a half game lead in the section standings.

“I think the enthusiasm and the energy showed that (taking over first place) was the goal and that they wanted it pretty bad,” Charleroi head coach Bill Wiltz said. “This is a good team and I love these kids. They’re a good group to work with; they listen, they’re very respectful and to see them have the success, I’m loving every second of it.”
