As the joyous celebration in the McKeesport locker room below, there was no hiding the smile on Eric Smith’s face.
His Tigers rolled into Belle Vernon Area’s gym and snapped the Leopards’ seven-game winning streak in dominant fashion, walking away with a 72-53 win.
McKeesport (5-5, 3-2) worked over BVA on the boards, outrebounding them 41-20, leading to a number of second-chance points.
“Nevaeh (Stepanik) and Jhayla (Bray) were impressive down low tonight,” Smith said. “Coming in, I was a little worried about Grace Henderson. I’d seen a lot of good things from her on film, but those two really took advantage down low.”
Drennen was pleased with his team’s start, as the Leopards’ intense defensive pressure forced the Tigers into seven first-quarter turnovers. Those allowed BVA to jump out to a 16-9 lead at the 3:06-mark of the first behind 3-pointers from Lindsay Steeber, Rachel Wobrak and Taylor Rodriguez.
