“Sweet,” “funny,” “artistic,” “passionate” — those were some of the words Simone Dobosh’s friends used to describe her while waiting to be part of a surprise that could change her life.

On Monday morning, executives from Sallie Mae, a national financial and college-planning company, surprised Dobosh, an Elizabeth Forward High School senior, with a $25,000 Bridging the Dream scholarship.

The scholarship recognizes high school juniors and seniors who excel in academics, athletics, community services or school activities, but whose financial circumstances may not permit them to fulfill their college dreams. Dobosh was one of just seven students chosen from thousands of nominees nationwide to receive one of this year’s scholarships.

“She works so hard for everything and she’s so motivated,” Dobosh’s friend, Haley Halerz said. “After everything she’s been through, she really deserves this.”
