Improvements are coming to a local section of the Great Allegheny Passage, and trail council leaders say the upgrades will make for a more enjoyable bicycle ride as trail patrons head toward Pittsburgh from the Mid-Mon Valley.
The Steel Valley Trail Council has announced the Allegheny Regional Asset District, also known as RAD, has approved a $57,000 grant to for the purpose of paving the 1.2 mile section of the trail in the Waterfront behind the condominiums, office buildings and restaurants.
The Steel Valley Trail Council manages a section of the GAP, which offers 152 miles of hiking and biking between Cumberland, Md. and Pittsburgh. In Cumberland, the GAP joins the C&O Canal Towpath, creating a continuous trail experience, 320-miles-long, to Washington, D.C.
The Steel Valley section of the trail connects in McKeesport, travels through the city and into Duquesne and Whitaker before it enters Homestead at the Waterfront in Munhall. The Steel Valley portion of the trail then extends past the Waterfront, along side Sandcastle water park and under the Glenwood Bridge to connect to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail System, which ends the GAP at Point State Park.
