Council seeks to oust Shorraw, Coles

With the new year under way, Monessen council hopes state legislators’ resolutions will include removing Mayor Matt Shorraw and Councilman Gil Coles from office.

Councilmen Anthony Orzechowski and Dave Feehan and Councilwoman Lois Thomas sent a second formal letter Dec. 27 to Gov. Tom Wolf in Harrisburg, detailing their concerns.

Council first wrote to Wolf May 24, while the late Councilman Ron Chiaravalle was still serving — three months before Thomas was appointed to fill his vacant seat.

“In that letter, we raised concerns regarding (Shorraw’s) disclosure of personnel and litigation strategy information that was jeopardizing the city, as well as his utilization of the city’s tax collection process to solicit donations for a private nonprofit organization,” council wrote last week. “…Unfortunately, as the year progressed, the actions of (Shorraw and Coles) have grown worse, placing the city in a position of great detriment.”
