Valley Oldies: Looking ahead to a new year with more backward glances

There must be some truth to that time-honored adage about time flying when you’re having fun.
That certainly has been the case here as we prepare to welcome 2019 with a journey down Memory Lane for a random look at this day in history via the archives of The Monessen Daily Independent, The Charleroi Mail, The Valley Independent and The Daily Republican of Monongahela.

Dec. 31, 1918
After being closed for two months, Charleroi public schools resumed their sessions Monday morning. All the teachers but two reported for duty, while attendance of the pupils at all schools was satisfactory. Because of the recent influenza, it was believed attendance would be worse but reports show that this fear has not been realized.
