The new owners of the former Monessen Municipal Complex have been granted a license to house radioactive materials at the site.
Best Medical Group, owned by Virginia-based millionaire entrepreneur Krishna Suthanthiran, purchased the former complex at 1 Wendell Ramey Way from the city in May 2017.
Community Relations Coordinator Lauren Fraley with the Department of Environmental Protection’s Southwest Regional Office said Wednesday the state granted Best Medical’s radioactive materials license for the Monessen building last week.
“As part of DEP’s pre-licensing process, the department recently inspected the site and found no radioactive or hazardous materials on site,” Fraley said. “As a licensee, Best Medical will be subject to state and federal regulations and undergo regular inspections.”
Farley said the DEP’s Radiation Protection Program licenses Pennsylvania facilities that possess radioactive material often used in hospitals, colleges and industries for medical, research and industrial purposes.
“The objective of the licensing program is to ensure radioactive material is used safely, disposed of properly, and facilities are free from contamination when licensed operations are terminated,” she said.
