Monessen police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying possible suspects in a grisly attack on a dog.
Around 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19, officers were called to the Herman Mihalich Memorial River Launch on Monongahela Street in the city’s Eastgate section for reports of a deceased dog.
The dog, a Cane Corso, also known as an Italian mastiff, was found near the railroad tracks with its decapitated head placed next to its torso, police said.
“There was no indication of the dog being hit by a train,” Officer Dominic Faieta wrote in a report. “The body of the dog looked to be dropped off and the head placed next to it.”
Hoffman Animal Control of Delmont retrieved the dog’s body and held it for several days.
A Hoffman spokeswoman said Thursday that the dog did not have any identification tags or a microchip.
