‘Scarf tree’ returns in Monongahela

Four years ago, Kim Velmer thought of an idea for a community project in memory of her mother, Norma Dennis.
She never thought it would grow into what it has today, but in the winter months as she passes Chess Park and sees scarves taking the place of the leaves that are falling from the trees, she fondly thinks of her mom and all of the area people who are a little warmer.
On Saturday, Velmer and a handful of her go-to volunteers will nestle scarves throughout the branches of trees in Monongahela’s Chess Park to once again ensure residents have access to winter clothing.
The Scarves Project was launched four years ago after Velmer saw a similar initiative in New York City’s Central Park. She brought the idea to the city and it’s been embraced ever since.
Each November, scarves that are donated by various organizations and individuals are tied to branches throughout the park and a plastic bin with other winter wear is placed in the gazebo.
