The Roscoe Sportsmen’s Association is hoping to make Christmas a little more magical for area youth this year.
A nonprofit association with more than 400 members, the group frequently sponsors events or donates to charitable causes. This year that is happening through the Christmas for Kids Committee.
On Sunday, the committee is hosting a Christmas for Kids Steak Fry at the Roscoe Sportsmen’s Association.
Committee member Shannon Johnson said all funds raised that day will be used to purchase Christmas presents for Mon Valley children in need.
Set for noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 28, walk-ins are welcome the day of the event, but orders are preferred in advance to determine the amount of food needed.
Dinners will comprise steak or chicken, a potato, vegetable and dessert for $15.
Children 12 and younger will receive a free hot dog.
The event will also feature a half the take drawing and a gift auction.
Several community organizations and businesses have donated baskets for the event, Johnson said.
Although there will not be musical entertainment, the football game featuring the Steelers facing off against the Cleavland Browns at Heinz Field, will be shown during the event.
Johnson said it is the first year the sportsmen’s association has sponsored such an event, but she is hoping to make it a tradition.
“I would really like to make this an annual event so we can make sure the kids who are less fortunate have something nice for Christmas,” Johnson said.
The group is hoping to help 30 to 50 students in the California, Charleroi and Bentworth school districts.
Donations for the gift auction are still being accepted.
